What is the difference between three-axis, four-axis and five-axis in machining?

Three-axis machining center

Generally refers to three axes that move linearly in three directions: up and down, front and back, and left and right. A three-axis machining center can only process one surface at a time, which is suitable for processing some disc parts.

Four-axis machining center

Add a rotating axis to the three axes, usually rotating 360° in the horizontal plane, but not at high speed. Suitable for processing some box parts.

Five-axis machining center

Also called five-axis linkage machining center, it is a machining center with high technological content and high precision specially used for machining complex curved surfaces. There is a big difference between a five-axis machining center and a pentahedron machining center. Many people don’t know this and mistakenly regard a pentahedron machining center as a five-axis machining center. The five-axis machining center has five axes: x, y, z, a, and c. The xyz and ac axes form five-axis linkage machining, which is good at spatial curved surface machining, special-shaped machining, hollowing machining, punching, oblique holes, bevel cutting, etc. The “pentahedron machining center” is similar to the three-axis machining center, except that it can process five faces at the same time, but it cannot process special shapes, drill oblique holes, cut bevels, etc.

Although the five-axis machining center has outstanding advantages over the four-axis and three-axis, not all products are suitable for five-axis machining, and those suitable for three-axis machining may not be suitable for five-axis machining. If the original three-axis machining product is used for five-axis machining, not only will the cost increase, but the effect may not be good. Only by making reasonable arrangements and designing suitable machine tools for the product can the value of the machine itself be brought into play.
