What is mill-turn machining?

A CNC lathe is a machine tool that primarily uses cutting tools to machine rotating workpieces. Generally, the cutting tool is fixed at a specific position on the machine tool, and the workpiece rotates along the axis under the clamping of a fixture, being cut when it approaches the cutting edge. Therefore, it is primarily suitable for machining shafts, discs, sleeves, and other workpieces with rotating surfaces, and is one of the most widely used types of machine tools in machinery manufacturing and repair shops. Common CNC milling machines and drilling machines, which perform rotary machining, are derived from CNC lathes. Its machining principle is that the workpiece rotates while the cutting tool remains stationary.

A CNC milling machine is a machine tool that primarily uses milling cutters to machine various surfaces on workpieces. Its main motion is the rotation of the milling cutter, while the workpiece and milling cutter can move as feed motion. In other words, the workpiece is fixed in a certain position on the machine tool, and the milling cutter rotates at high speed under the clamping of the fixture. When it touches the workpiece, it processes planes, grooves, and various curved surfaces, gears, etc. CNC milling machines are machines that use milling cutters to mill workpieces. On a CNC milling machine, planes (horizontal and vertical planes), grooves (keyways, T-slots, dovetail grooves, etc.), geared parts (gears, spline shafts, sprockets), helical surfaces (threads, helical grooves), and various curved surfaces can be processed. In addition, it can also be used for machining the surface and internal holes of rotating bodies and for cutting operations. Because it involves multi-tool intermittent cutting, CNC milling machines have high productivity. The machining principle of a CNC milling machine is that the workpiece is fixed while the cutting tool rotates.

CNC milling-turning compound, as the name suggests… In essence, a CNC milling-turning machine tool is a composite machine tool that combines the functionalities of both a CNC lathe and a CNC milling machine. Its functions include turning-milling, turning-milling-grinding, and milling-grinding. The purpose of this composite function is to enable a single machine tool to perform multiple tasks in one setup, improving machining efficiency and accuracy. Because it combines the features of multiple CNC lathes into one machine tool, it significantly reduces floor space and lowers costs such as rent. Although the unit price of a CNC milling-turning machine is relatively high, it can shorten the manufacturing process chain, reduce the number of tooling fixtures, workshop floor space, and equipment maintenance costs. From a business investment perspective, it can also effectively reduce overall fixed asset investment and significantly lower production operation and personnel and equipment management costs.
