Swiss-type lathes are generally used for machining small bar-stock parts, especially for large-batch production, where many components can be finished in one single operation. As long as the machining involves bar stock with a relatively small diameter (not exceeding 32mm), Swiss-type lathes paired with feeders offer significant advantages—since these lathes must be equipped with feeders to perform machining operations. In this configuration, the unit functions as a compact, independent production line, and it holds distinct advantages in terms of machining speed and labor cost reduction.

The primary difference between Swiss-type lathes and conventional turning lathes lies in their operational mechanisms:
- Swiss-type lathes: The material moves while the cutting tool stays stationary.
- Conventional turning lathes: The cutting tool moves while the material remains fixed.
In China, Swiss-type lathes were traditionally known as longitudinal turning lathes. They are mainly designed for large-batch machining of small bar-stock parts. Typically, a feeder feeds the bar stock through the spindle through-hole, and a collet chuck clamps the material automatically. If a part has a long overhang, a tailstock center is required for support. For machining operations on the tail end of the part, a secondary spindle must be installed. Additionally, to drill equidistant holes (e.g., 4-hole or 6-hole patterns), the lathe needs to be fitted with power tool holders and a spindle indexing system.
Swiss-type lathes are subject to restrictions on the diameter of the bar stock. Most of the largest models can only machine parts with a diameter of 20mm; only a few models capable of handling 32mm diameter parts have been documented in technical literature. For any part within the machining range of Swiss-type lathes, conventional turning lathes are hard to match them in terms of machining precision and speed.
The key advantages are as follows:
- Continuous Machining for Long Parts: With a single clamping and non-stop spindle rotation, it can turn parts over 200mm in length. For instance, when machining 5mm-long small parts, both conventional turning lathes and Swiss-type lathes are applicable, but a Swiss-type lathe can continuously produce 20–30 pieces in one go before needing to stop for material feeding.
- Exceptional Machining Rigidity: During cutting, the tool always operates extremely close to the fixed position of the material. Just imagine—after clamping the part in the lathe, the tool cuts only a few millimeters away from the clamping point; this setup delivers an exceptionally high level of rigidity.
- Integrated Turning and Milling Capability: Swiss-type lathes combine turning and milling functions in one unit, enabling the one-step machining of complex parts—a capability that conventional turning lathes cannot rival.
In the past, there were old-style automatic lathes commonly referred to as cam-operated lathes. Nowadays, the more advanced CNC automatic lathes are what we call Swiss-type lathes or longitudinal turning lathes. Their core feature is that the spindle moves back and forth along the Z-axis, while the tool can move along the X and Y axes—allowing 3D machining and one-time part completion.
