What functions does turn-milling composite machining offer?

A turn-mill machining center (also known as a turn-mill machine tool) is a multitasking machining system that integrates turning and milling capabilities. It enables the completion of multiple processing steps for complex parts on a single machine, significantly enhancing machining efficiency and precision. Key functions and application characteristics include:

  1. Turning Functions

Conventional turning: Performs turning operations such as external diameters, internal bores, end faces, shoulders, and tapered surfaces.

Precision threading: Supports the turning of single-start/multi-start threads, tapered threads, and face threads.

Parting-off/Grooving: Radial or axial grooving and parting-off operations.

High-speed turning: Suitable for high-speed finish turning, such as the machining of non-ferrous metals.

  1. Milling Functions

Multi-axis simultaneous milling: Enables 3-axis, 4-axis, or even 5-axis simultaneous milling via an additional milling spindle (such as a live turret or B-axis).

Complex contour machining: Includes curved surfaces, helical grooves, impellers, cams, etc.

Drilling/Tapping: Machining of inclined holes, radial holes, and evenly spaced holes on a circumference; supports rigid tapping.

Face milling: Face or side milling, cavity milling, slotting, etc.

  1. Core Functions of Multi-Tasking Machining

Multi-process completion with a single setup: Eliminates errors caused by repeated positioning and enhances precision (e.g., for aerospace components and medical devices).

Angular head machining: Enables milling of inclined surfaces or complex geometries through B-axis indexing or continuous rotation.

Synchronous turn-milling: Performs milling while the turning spindle rotates (e.g., for machining eccentric parts or asymmetrical features).

Y-axis capability: Select models feature a Y-axis, enabling off-center milling (e.g., for keyways and side features).

  1. Specialized Process Capabilities

Live Tooling Turret: Equipped with rotating tools to perform non-turning operations such as milling and drilling.

Sub-spindle (Dual-spindle): Enables automatic workpiece transfer for complete front- and back-side machining.

Automatic Tool Changer: Features a multi-station tool magazine, supporting automatic switching between turning and milling tools.

In-process Inspection: Integrated probes for real-time measurement of workpiece dimensions and tool wear compensation.

  1. Applicable Industries and Parts

High-precision parts: e.g., aero-engine blades, hydraulic valve bodies, precision gears.

Complex, non-standard shaped parts: worms, parts with non-circular cross-sections, crankshafts, eccentric cams.

Small-batch, high-variety production: suitable for flexible manufacturing; reduces machine changeover time.
