What are the common faults of surface grinders and how to troubleshoot and repair them?

Surface grinders may experience a variety of common faults over long-term use. The following are some common fault types and their corresponding troubleshooting and repair methods.

Fault 1: Unsatisfactory grinding surface roughness. Possible causes include grinding wheel wear, improper dressing, inappropriate grinding parameters, and machine vibration. When troubleshooting, first check the grinding wheel for wear. If wear is evident, replace or dress the wheel. Verify that the grinding wheel is properly dressed and the dresser is operating properly. Check grinding parameters such as grinding speed, feed rate, and grinding depth, and adjust them appropriately. If the machine vibrates, check the machine’s anchor bolts for looseness and ensure proper alignment of all moving parts. Tighten and adjust these accordingly.

Fault 2: Inaccurate grinding dimensions. This may be caused by a feed system malfunction, measurement device errors, or loose workpiece clamping. For the feed system, check the wear of the lead screw and nut, the tightness of the drive chain or belt, and the operating condition of the motor and drive. Measuring devices such as gauges or digital displays may have errors and need to be calibrated or replaced. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped to prevent movement during the grinding process.

Fault 3: The machine tool experiences abnormal noise or vibration. Causes may include mechanical component wear, poor lubrication, or motor failure. Carefully inspect all moving parts, such as guide rails, lead screws, and bearings, for wear and promptly replace any severely worn parts. Check the lubrication system to ensure sufficient and proper lubricant supply. Inspect the motor to check the bearings and windings for proper function.

Fault 4: Hydraulic system failure. This may include insufficient pressure, excessive oil temperature, or leakage. Check the operating condition of the hydraulic pump for wear or damage. Verify the correct settings of pressure control valves, such as the relief valve and pressure reducing valve. Check the oil pipes and joints for leaks and ensure the oil is clean. If the oil temperature is too high, check the cooling system for proper operation.

Fault 5: Electrical system failure. Such as difficulty in starting the motor, malfunction of the control system, damage to electrical components, etc. Check whether the power supply is stable, whether the motor wiring is in good condition, whether the control system program and parameters are correct, whether the relevant sensors and controllers are working properly, and whether damaged electrical components should be replaced in time.
