Vertical lathe

Vertical lathe machining is a highly efficient machining method for large, heavy or irregularly shaped rotating parts. It achieves high-precision and high-rigidity cutting through the vertical layout of the spindle and the radial feed of the cutting tool.

I. Core Principles and Structural Features of Vertical Lathe Machining

Vertical Spindle Layout: The spindle of a vertical lathe is perpendicular to the worktable. The workpiece is mounted vertically on the worktable, and the cutting tool moves radially (horizontally) to complete the cutting. This design avoids the vibration problems caused by workpiece overhang in horizontal lathes, and is particularly suitable for machining parts with large diameters and short lengths.

High-Rigidity Vertical Lathes: Vertical lathes typically employ heavy-duty beds, large-span columns, and rigid beams to ensure system stability during heavy-duty cutting. For example, the worktable diameter of a CNC double-column vertical lathe can reach several meters, with a load-bearing capacity exceeding one hundred tons, meeting the high-efficiency machining needs of large molds, wind turbine hubs, and other parts.

Technical Advantages of Vertical Lathe Machining

High Precision and High Efficiency: The vertical lathe employs constant surface speed cutting technology, ensuring a constant surface velocity on the workpiece and improving machining quality.

For example, when machining large bearing rings, a surface roughness of Ra 0.8μm and a roundness error of less than 0.01mm can be achieved. CNC vertical lathes support automatic programming and online measurement, reducing manual intervention and improving production efficiency.

Complex Surface and Irregularly Shaped Part Machining Capability: By adding C-axis and power turret devices, vertical lathes can achieve milling and turning operations.

For example, when machining integral bladed disks for aero-engines, milling of the flow path surface, blade root fillets, and mounting edges can be completed in one operation. For asymmetric rotating parts (such as eccentric shafts and camshafts), the vertical lathe can achieve multi-axis linkage control through the electronic gearbox (EGB) function.

Heavy-Duty Cutting and Stability: The bed of the vertical lathe is constructed of high-strength cast iron or welded steel, combined with hydrostatic guideway technology, enabling it to withstand hundreds of tons of cutting forces.

For example, when machining large gears for mining machinery, the cutting depth can reach over 20mm. The CNC system further enhances machining stability through functions such as thermal error compensation and vibration monitoring.
