Difference between milling machine and machining center

In modern manufacturing, milling machine and machining center are two common CNC machine tools, which differ in structure, function and application. The following is the difference between milling machine and machining center:

  1. Structure and function
    Machining center: Machining center is a multifunctional CNC machine tool, which usually has three-axis or more axial movement functions, such as X, Y, and Z axes. In addition to basic milling functions, machining centers can also perform drilling, boring, tapping and other processes. It usually has a large worktable area and a high cutting speed, which is suitable for efficient and precise metal parts processing.
    Milling machine: Milling machine mainly focuses on plane engraving and surface processing, and usually adopts a two-axis or three-axis structure, such as X and Y axes. Its cutting speed is relatively low, and it is mainly used for processing non-metallic materials such as wood, plastic, acrylic, foam, etc. Milling machine is generally equipped with a high-speed spindle and tools of different shapes for fine engraving and surface decoration.
  2. Application fields
    Machining center: Due to its high speed and high precision, machining centers are widely used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, mold manufacturing, mechanical processing and other fields, especially for precision machining and mass production of complex parts.
    Engraving and milling machine: Engraving and milling machine is mainly used for decoration and two-dimensional/three-dimensional engraving in the fields of artworks, signs, advertisements, furniture, etc., suitable for personalized customization, small batch production and sample production.
  3. Performance indicators
    Spindle speed: The spindle speed of the machining center is generally low, while the spindle speed of the engraving and milling machine is high, especially the high-speed engraving and milling machine, which can reach a higher speed.
    Spindle power: The spindle power of the machining center is usually greater than that of the engraving and milling machine, which is suitable for heavy cutting and roughing.
    Cutting amount: The machining center has a large cutting amount, which is suitable for heavy cutting and roughing; the engraving and milling machine has a small cutting amount, which is suitable for fine processing.
    Speed: The moving speed and feed speed of the engraving and milling machine and the engraving machine are usually faster than those of the machining center, especially the high-speed machine equipped with a linear motor can reach a moving speed of up to 120m/min.
    Precision: The precision of the three is not much different, but the precision requirements of the machining center are usually higher.

Choosing a milling machine or a machining center depends on the specific processing needs. If large-scale and efficient metal parts processing is required, a machining center is a more suitable choice. If fine engraving and surface decoration are required, especially on non-metallic materials, a milling machine is more suitable.
